Run for Jake, Help Feed the Hungry

Montgomery County community and beyond will come together Sunday morning to run/walk for one of their own.

The second-annual Run for Jake will start at 8:30 a.m. (registration at 7 a.m.) The 5-K run and 1-mile walk will take place along scenic Tookany Creek Park in Cheltenham Township.

The run costs $21 if you book online. All the proceeds go to the Physical Education Department and Athletic programs at Cheltenham High School and Philabundence.

But, who was Jake?

Jake Berkowitz, a 2000 graduate of Cheltenham, was a student-athlete who went on the attend Emory University. He was a man of faith who worked with people in need in both the Philadelphia and Atlanta regions.

Jake was diagnosed with cancer while attending Emory. He came back to Cheltenham to fight the disease.

Jake died in November 2005. The Run for Jake was established in his memory as a way to help two causes he cared so much about -- Cheltenham athletics and helping the needy.

So, strap on those sneakers and run (or walk) for Jake.
