Record Store Day Means Cool Stuff, Tunes

Over 700 independent record retailers across the country will take part in the second-annual Record Store Day.

Believe it or not, people still buy music the old-fashioned way: on CD or vinyl from inside an establishment (as opposed to using iTunes on a laptop, cut off from any human interaction).

The record store shopper will find some participating stores offering in-store live shows, RSD-only discounts, limited edition buys and free merch.

The event began about a year ago as a way for record stores, listeners and musicians to unite and celebrate the art of music.
Metallica christened the first RSD April 19, 2008 at Rasputin Music in San Francisco, Calif. Now, every third Saturday in April is designated to record stores.

β€œWe’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores -- not online retailers or corporate behemoths,” explains the RSD Web site on store-credentials necessary to be included in the holiday. Meaning, chain CD sellers (like Wal-Mart and FYE) are excluded.

Local Philly participants include:
- A.K.A. Music at 27 N 2nd Street in Old City
- Hideaway Music at 8612 Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill
- Jaz Sounds at 15 S 11th Street in Center City
- Music Box Records at 2713 W Girard Avenue in Fairmount
- Tequila Sunrise Records at 525 W Girard Avenue in Northern Liberties

Music lovers should also visit South Street.

Repo Records at 585 South Street will be worth a visit. The shop will be selling exclusive CDs, limited edition vinyl and posters, plus a guest DJ will be spinning throughout the day.

Digital Ferret on S 4th Street is hosting DJs Robin Graves, Blackwidow, Totentanz and Data Drift from noon to 10 p.m.

Another city spot is worth the visit. Main Street Music in Manayunk will feature two live performances for shoppers to enjoy.

For music lovers over the bridge, New Jersey is where you get your music fix. Try Bus Stop Music CafΓ© at 148 S Broadway in Pitman, Grooveground at 647 Haddon Avenue in Collingswood or Tunes at 910 Greentree Square (Route 73 N) in Marlton.
