Phila. Skyline Shines Once More

For seven whole months, we have been lost without the illuminated, scrolling messages atop the PECO building in Center City.

With the lights gone black, we commuters didn’t have anything to distract us from the road—that is other than cell phones, eating, make-up application and whatever else drivers do on the roads these days (shame, shame).

But, the lights switched-on once more with a special seven-minute showcase on Independence Day.

The PECO spectacular featured its new, energy efficient, LED Crown Lights system made of 118 columns of lights.

More than two million LEDs were used in the new system, according to PECO.

We gotta say we’re happy the messages started scrolling again—the skyline just hasn’t been the same without ‘em.

PECO has displayed messages atop the 23rd and Market Street building since July 4, 1976 and has scrolled more than 17,500 messages.

The unveiling comes after PECO’s filing with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission for $342 million for energy programs, like CFL giveaways and low-income programs, a press release stated.
