"Romance at the Rosenbach" tours kick off today, just in time for Valentine's Day. Historians and literature lovers will enjoy this walk back through history in appreciation of how love was done, back in the day.
The docent-led "Romance" tours show off the museum's "softer side," interpreting romance through the collection's decorative and fine arts, as well as the works of such poets as Oscar Wilde and Lord Byron. Also included in the tour are notable pieces by Charles Dickens, Robert Burns and poet Rebecca Gratz.
The Rosenbach Museum & Library itself is an 1860s townhouse and garden that is filled to the brim with 18th- and 19th-century furniture, paintings and decorative arts. The collection houses such literary treasures as a first-edition copy of Don Quixote, original drawings and books by William Blake, an original manuscript of James Joyce's Ulysses and an impressive number of original illustrations and drawings, to name a few.
"Romance at the Rosenbach" tours are available throughout the month on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 and 7:00, and Saturdays at 11:00, 1:00 and 3:00. Tours last approximately one hour and are free with admission.
