Class Acts at the Philadelphia School of Burlesque

Learn the bump-and-grind basics with a burlesque pro.

So you already took that pole dancing class, now what? How about perfecting your burlesque act?

Philadelphia School of Burlesque at Fishtown's Walking Fish Theater is offering classes in the bump-and-grind basics taught by the esteemed Annie A-Bomb, founder of the Revival Burlesque troupe. The goal of the $80 four-week course, which begins Tuesday, May 19, is not just to learn to make pasties (which is, in fact, on the syllabus), but to develop a unique burlesque act that students can then take on the road... or at least perform in a student showcase.

Miss A-Bomb, an 11-year veteran of the Philly burlesque scene, will instruct students on the history of burlesque, classic glove, stocking and other moves as well as the best places to purchase burlesque supplies. They'll also learn how to create a routine and will be able to practice it in class.

While no one is required to strip if they don't want to, some students will definitely be doing just that. The class is limited to 15 people and sorry fellas, it's ladies only. If the gents want to take in some burlesque, they can check out Revival Burlesque's new show, Prohibition Follies, on May 16 or 17, also at the Walking Fish.
