A Los Angeles Fire Department member was able to escape a close call Thursday after his vehicle was swept into the ocean by fast-moving mud along Pacific Coast Highway.

Kelli Ferrone wiped blinds and window sills inside her daughters’ elementary school, just a half mile from the devastating Palisades Fire that scorched the coastal enclave in Los Angeles. The cotton swabs and wipes came up black.

NBC4’s Robert Kovacik offered to keep the Pacific Palisades homeowner’s artwork safe as he evacuated the deadly flames on a bicycle on Jan. 7.

Two people suspected of impersonating firefighters were detained Saturday after trying to go through a checkpoint limited to emergency crews responding to the Palisades Fire.

New questions are being raised about whether the City of Los Angeles and its fire department did enough to prepare in the days ahead of the deadly Palisades Fire.
