A construction job inside a historic African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church at the Jersey Shore led to a discovery 134 years in the making.

A remarkable piece of history has been revealed in the rafters of a historic church at the Jersey Shore. A recently discovered note dating back 134 years has provided insight into the building’s past and its place in Cape May’s rich African American heritage. NBC10’s Ted Greenberg explains.

Camden County native, basketball star and Hall of Famer Valerie Still has made a name for herself but what she didn’t know is that her last name has deep roots in Black Heritage that helped shape our area. NBC10’s Siobhan McGirl spoke with Still and has her story.

One of the oldest African American bookstores in the country is right in Philadelphia. Dawud Hakim founded the store in 1959 specifically to educate people about Black history. NBC10’s Fred Shropshire spoke with his daughter Yvonne Blake, who has been running the store since her father’s death nearly 30 years ago, keeping his mission and legacy alive.

Asbury Park has been known for its music scene and culture but the popular Jersey Shore destination has also faced challenges.
