One Year of Firsts: Burning Calories With Hula

Day 31

Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights. ~Pauline R. Kezer

First, a little note, enter my FIRST FIRST CONTEST to be featured on this BLOG.  All the details are below, but first, today's first:

Today was a perfect example of why I love this adventure in Firsts.  Jennifer Rice was one of the first people to reach out to me through email and said TRY THIS for a FIRST: Hula Hooping.  It really wasn't on my list of things to do.  I didn't like it as a child. Why would I like it now?

But Jennifer was so enthusiastic -- I'm a sucker for enthusiasm. Today we met and she showed me why this is not your kid's Hula Hoop.

Come on. That's cool, right?

Jen says she lost 20 pounds just hula hooping last year. She works for a major drug company and teaches hula hooping exercise classes and makes adult exercise hula hoops with her boyfriend as a hobby business.

She says you can burn 600 calories an hour. I believe it. This is a work out. It took me about a dozen tries to get this going.

I loved this. I bought one of her hula hoops. I might take it to the office. If I'm stressed,  I might just take it out and do a hula hoop break. (I would think it would put any issues in perspective) Jennifer is President and Ringleader of Tailspin and you can find her at tailspinhoops.com.

THE FIRST FIRST CONTEST

So I am also celebrating one month of FIRSTS. WHOA!

I'm hoping you will help me and tell me your best First story. Has this blog inspired you? Tell me. Send a comment (at the bottom of this blog) or send an email luann.cahn@nbcuni.com.  On Saturday, the person who sends me the best First story will be featured on my blog that day.

You can also follow @oneyearoffirsts on Twitter and find me on Facebook.  Lets end this blog with a little hula hoop instruction from Jennifer.
