Day 74 meant it was time to invite the neighbors over for dinner, finally!

The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor. ~Hubert H. Humphrey

Mary and I have been talking to each other from across the street we live on for the last five years. That's how long we've been in our current house.

During those years, Mary and her husband Paul have helped us shovel snow, given us vegetables out of their garden and kept an eye on our house.  We've offered extra parking when they needed it. ( I know. Very lopsided, which is part of the reason I really had to right this situation.)

We mostly just wave and yell,"How ya doing?" or "The yard looks great", or something or other about the weather. We've discussed road projects while in the road, things going on in the neighborhood, but we've never taken our brief chats into our homes.

Today, we changed that.  It was about time.

I don't know why but I've always been a little shy about getting to know my neighbors. I've lived some places where I never met anyone.  Obviously, I'm not really shy, but I can't really explain my reluctance to engage with folks who live next to me. It doesn't make sense.

Well, anyway, Mary and Paul have been so great and generous, it just seemed silly not to get together with them.   So glad we did.

It IS good to know your neighbors and know we've made new friends.  All I can think now is, why didn't we do this before?
