Pennsylvania Animal Park Celebrates Birth of 1-in-10-Million White Bison

A rare white American bison calf is the newest addition to a southwestern Pennsylvania animal park.

The male calf named Liberty was born April 29 at the Living Treasures Wild Animal Park in Donegal Township. The park is located about 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, along state Route 711.

The National Bison Association estimates that white bison occur in one of every 10 million births. The park has two of the breed— including Liberty's mother, Buttercup.

The North American bison population is currently about 500,000.

Park Director Thomas Guiher tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that park officials are excited to showcase 5-year-old Buttercup and the calf.

President Obama on Monday signed the National Bison Legacy Act, naming the American bison as the national mammal.
