WATCH: Family Frees Deer Trapped in Backyard Fence

A Massachusetts family got a surprise close encounter with wildlife over the weekend, when what looked like two branches sticking out of their fence turned out to be a deer in need of a rescue.

It started Sunday morning when “Dixie” the dog was barking in the back yard of an Attleboro home. Seven-year-old Grant Kelley was the first to see the deer sticking through the fence.

"We looked outside and we thought it was two huge branches but then we looked on the other side and we saw a huge head," Grant told New England Cable News.

Grant's father, Brian Kelley, was just coming home from working the overnight shift and went to help.

"I started to pet the back of the deer to calm him down cause he was kicking," he said.

He then started the careful process of freeing the animal.

"I started to gently free the bottom legs first, release the pickets and then was able to move the deer gently off the top of the fence," he said.

Kate Kelley captured her husband's rescue mission on video. After the animal was freed, it took off into the woods.

"And we are all animal lovers in this family so we were thrilled to see it ended well," Kate Kelly said. "We were very fortunate and so we named it ‘Lucky.’"
