Tortoise on the Lam in Del.

Exotic 25-pound reptile escapes when pen gate is let open

Zori the tortoise is on the lam.

The 8-year-old, 25-pound African-spurred tortoise slipped out of its pen on May 13 when her owner's children apparently forgot to secure a gate at the home in Camden-Wyoming, just south of Dover.

Barbara Pizzoferrato tells WBOC that the tortoise is like her child and could be anywhere on her 300 acres of land.

Pizzoferrato is getting some help from local authorities in the search for Zori.

"The Caroline County Sheriff's Office has stepped in," Pizzoferrato told WBOC. "They have gone door-to-door urging neighbors, hunters and farmers to keep an out for her."

The animal, which can live to be 100, eats grasses and plants and some fruit.

Anyone who has seen Zori should contact the Kent County SPCA at 302-698-3006.
