School Lunch Lesson: Back to Basics

Cold sandwiches dished out to punish unruly students

Harrisburg’s Camp Curtin School cut back lunch to just cold sandwiches this week as punishment for acting up.

The Patriot-News reported the unusual step was taken to punish students for not appreciating the hot meals offered in the school cafeteria.

An unnamed school administrator told The Patriot-News’ Kourtney Geers, “we created the opportunity where we could show them what the bare minimum would be.” He also said fruits and vegetables were also available to complete a balanced meal for the students.

Harrisburg School District’s Camp Curtin School has 800 students, from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, according to the school’s website.

An administrator told the paper the punishment was meant to correct behavior issues, such as students not cleaning up after themselves when they finished eating.

School officials said the punishment will end this week and normal hot meals will be served starting Monday.
