Dune Buggy-Like ATV Hits the Tracks, Cops Follow

Police pursue stolen vehicle over railroad tracks

A bizarre chase weaved its way through Philadelphia Thursday night as three men inside a stolen yellow dune buggy-looking ATV led police along railroad tracks and overpasses.

Luckily no one was hurt during the pursuit.

It all started around 9:30 when cops responded to calls about a stolen vehicle at N 5th Street and W Susquehanna Avenue in North Philly, according to Philadelphia Police.

With a police chopper overhead the men zigzagged on and off the tracks, over railway bridges and even turning around at one point.

During the chase the unidentified suspects wound up on the railroad tracks driving through various neighborhoods including Hunting Park.

SEPTA regional rail service between Wayne Junction and Fernrock was delayed during the chase -- temporarily stranding riders.

After about 30 minutes the vehicle came to a stop near Fishers Lane in the Juniata Park neighborhood.

Police on foot quickly approached the vehicle as the driver surrendered on the ground next to the vehicle where he was arrested. The passenger was then taken out of the vehicle and also cuffed.

Another passenger jumped out at some point and was able to escape.

By 10:40 p.m. SEPTA service had resumed with some residual delays in North Philly, officials said.
