Oh Deer: Pennsylvania Racetrack Extends Season After Deer Jump Onto Track

A northwestern Pennsylvania racetrack is extending its racing season by three days to make up for cancellations in June when deer kept jumping onto the track during thoroughbred races.

The Erie Times-News says Presque Isle Downs & Casino's season will now end Oct. 6 instead of Thursday. The track holds races Sunday through Thursday.

The track canceled racing for two days after a deer jumped onto the track during a race June 28. Five deer also joined a race on June 22, prompting the track to cancel the rest of that night's races.

The track adjusted its starting times from 5:25 p.m. to 3:05 p.m. because experts say deer are most active near dusk. The track reverted to a normal schedule after building a fence and removing nearby brush, which was attracting the deer.
