World's largest piñata still standing tall on Broad Street

10 Tips for Buying Safe Toys
People get a close-up view of the world's largest pinata in Philadelphia, Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008. The giant mock donkey measures 60 feet, 4 inches long; 23 feet, 10.5 inches wide and 61 feet, 10.25 inches tall, breaking the Guinness Record.

Remember that huge piñata on Broad Street that almost caused a riot last week?

Well, its still standing all 6-stories tall in a vacant lot at Broad and Washington Streets guarded by three security personnel, according local blog Philly Chit Chat.

To refresh your memory, the piñata was part of a commercial shoot for Carnival Cruise Lines.

The cruise company built the world’s largest piñata, filled it with 8,000 lbs. of candy and then threw a huge public party to watch it be broken open.

No Candy for Pinata Event Participants

[PHI] No Candy for Pinata Event Participants
Philadelphia Police shut down the free event at Broad and Washington Streets in Center City after 7,000 people showed up to see the giant, 6-story donkey broke open with a wrecking ball. Officials were concerned that a riot would break out as people would attempt to grab pieces of the 8,000 lbs. of candy inside.

The problem was Carnival did not realize just how popular the event would be.  Over 7,000 people showed up to grab some of the candy and when the crowd became unruly, the Philly PD shut down the event.

Carnival finished the shoot without the crowds and apparently left the piñata in tact.

The word on the street is that the wrecking ball will be brought in on Sunday, but no one knows for sure.

So if you’re in the area of PinatHO (We can carve out a new neighborhood around the colorful idol) Sunday, you just might get a couple thousand pieces of candy.
