NJ Police Search for Homeless Burial Ground

Police in New Jersey were investigating Thursday whether homeless people have been burying their friends.

The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office says a search of an area near the railroad tracks on the Trenton-Hamilton border revealed visible markers that could be burial areas or improvised memorials.

No human remains were found, though.

State police say the major crimes unit and cadaver dogs canvassed the area Wednesday. NJ Transit Police and the prosecutor's office continued the investigation Thursday.

The prosecutor's office says the search was launched after an offhand comment made to investigators working on an unrelated case.

The area along Route 129 near Lalor Street has been a reported to be a popular gathering place for homeless people.

A homeless man who said he knew of the site told The Trentonian that the cremated ashes of three homeless people were buried in that area and marked with gravestones.
