Baby Thought Stillborn Found Alive in Morgue

Her parents went to take a picture of the corpse, only to discover the baby was alive in a refrigerated drawer

A premature baby thought stillborn was found alive in a coffin in an Argentinian morgue, 12 hours after she was pronounced dead.

Analia Bouter gave birth to the baby three months early in the Perrando de Resistencia hospital in Resistencia, Argentina, last week, The Associated Press reported.

Bouter was told that her child had been born with no signs of life, and she and her husband were given a death certificate.

They returned to the hospital's morgue 12 hours later to say goodbye to the baby, whose body was being kept in a refrigerated drawer.

"We wanted to take a photo of our daughter. But when a worker opened the drawer we heard a cry and she was alive," Bouter said, according to the Daily Mail. She told Argentine news television channel Todo Noticias that she thought she was hallucinating.

BBC News reported that the child — named Luz Milagros, meaning "light miracles," for her unlikely survival — did not need resuscitation and seemed in good health.

"I don't know who is to blame, and I'm not thinking about it at this moment. The joy of knowing she's alive is covering every other feeling. I'm a Christian, and I believe this was a miracle of God," Bouter said.

The hospital for its part is investigating the incident.

"At the moment we have no explanation. The baby was attended to by obstetricians, gynecologists and a neonatologist. They all reached the same conclusion, that this girl was stillborn," the hospital's director said.
