Man Dies After Crashing Car Into NJ Old Age Home

Force of crash leaves car upright

A man died after crashing his sedan into the entrance of a Lakewood, N.J. assisted-living community early this morning.

The force of the crash at the Lakewood Courtyard left the car vertical, nearly perpendicular to the ground, the front end of the silver vehicle crushed under an entryway.

Video captured by the Lakewood Scoop shows the aftermath.

A Lakewood Police spokesman told NBC10 that Apolonio Velis-Perez was driving westbound on Main Street (Route 88) around 2 a.m. when he failed to turn at Madison Avenue (U.S. Route 9), jumped the curb and slammed into the Courtyard Lakewood at a high-rate of speed.

Velis-Perez, who had Pennsylvania plates on his car, died in the wreck. No one inside the building was injured, according to police.

No residents live in the area of the kosher assisted living facility that Velis-Perez struck. Building inspectors were called to the scene to make sure the structure remained sound.

Police are investigating if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
