Volunteers are being sought for a Delaware frog survey.
Potential volunteers for the Delaware Amphibian Monitoring Program need to have a car, Internet access and be willing to sit along the side of a road at night listening for frog calls.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says volunteers will learn the calls of Delaware's 17 frog species and then conduct three nighttime surveys between February and July each year. Volunteers will be given a route and listen for frogs at stops along the route where they will record the species they hear and the general number of frogs.
"We're looking for trends in frog populations," biologist Holly Niederriter told DelmarvaNow.com.
"It's not a survey we'll get hard and fast numbers from, but what we can do is look at changes over time," she said.
Each survey will take between two and three hours, not including driving time to the start point. State officials say those interested should be committed to volunteering for at least a few years.
