Birds of City Hall Ruffle Tourists' Feathers

Tourists complain about trapped birds

A few tourists have recently complained about the birds in Philadelphia’s City Hall -- both alive and dead.

There are nets around parts of the building and inside the walkway that are designed to keep the birds from landing on the ledges and to keep droppings from landing on passersby’s heads.

The complaints say that the birds seem to get trapped in the netting. They find their way in through holes in the at least 10-year-old netting, and then can’t seem to find their way back out.

Many seem right at home inside the building, building nests and laying eggs.

“What we’re trying to do with the netting is to strike the right balance between preserving the history and the beauty of the building and at the same time respecting the birds,” Mayor’s Office spokesman Doug Oliver said.

The Mayor’s Office is working with bird control groups to make sure they are doing the best they can to keep everyone and everything safe and clean, Oliver said.
