Del. Man Tries to Rob Couple in Horse & Buggy: Cops

Del. man accused in unrelated home burglary is caught after he allegedly tries to rob Amish couple

Delaware State Police say a Smyrna man tried to rob an Amish couple over the weekend.

Troopers say 45-year-old Mark A. Carter pulled his car in front of the couple's horse and buggy about 12:20 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Holly Island Road and Bryants Corner Road near Hartly, forcing it to stop. Police say Carter got out of the car, went to the couple armed with a handgun, and demanded money.

Police say the couple -- a 46-year-old man and his 45-year-old wife -- had no money, and Carter got back into his car and fled.

The couple got his license plate number and a cop later arrested Carter after stopping his car along Pearsons Corner Road. Police say they found a .22-caliber handgun -- that was reported stolen during a recent Smyrna robbery -- in Carter’s possession.

Two guitars also stolen during that July 11th burglary on Mount Vernon Street were also found in Carter’s car.

Carter -- who also has outstanding warrants in two other Delaware municipalities -- was charged with attempted robbery, burglary, theft, weapons offenses and other charges. He is being held on $123,100 cash bond.
