What the Tech?: Upgrade to This High-Tech Bed

You'll never want to leave your bedroom after buying this bed

We're wired to everything, so why not our bed?

Well now you have the chance to upgrade where you lay your head with a new bed from Philly-based luxury bed manufacturer Hollandia International.

Dubbed the iCon, this BMW of a bed is built specifically for your iOS devices – like the iPad, iPod and iPhone.

"Our slogan is let's stay in bed, we really want people to stay in bed as much as they can and have fun in bed," says Hollandia VP Maya Ben.

It has two docks built-in to the headboard, one for your iPad and another for your iPod or phone. Those docks will not only charge your devices, but also send music to a 250-watt speaker system.

The iCon can simply play your tunes or use them to control the internal massage system. The bed can vibrate to the music or focus run a series of pre-programmed massages to relieve your aching back.

With the bed's remote, you can also adjust the height of the back and front of the iCon to more easily read or sleep more soundly.

Speaking of the remote, it doesn’t use electricity to control the bed. A pneumatic tube passes air to the controls to send the bed up and down.

I watched as the Hollandia rep pulled the cord apart and simply blew air into the tube to control it.

The iCon also doesn’t use a box spring, leaving moving parts exposed to those who crawl underneath. To combat injuries to kids and pets, the bed employs motion sensors installed into the frame to stop all movement when tripped -- similar to a garage door system.

The bed also takes the idea of stashing your cash under the mattress literally with a safe installed in the frame.

Even the more traditional low-tech features are pretty high-tech. The bed's cover is made of "3D fabric" that resembles a membrane, allowing air to pass through and reduce sweating.

Underneath the mesh is a set of woven fibers made from recycled plastic. Aside from reducing pressure, the fibers keep out dust and bed bugs.

Lastly is the mattress -- a latex memory foam material that's infused with aloe vera meant to be hypoallergenic and antimicrobial.

Tons of tech means a big price tag. A queen size bed starts around $12,000, but that price can soar higher if you decide to add additional features like a retractable flat screen TV and surround sound.

You can also customize the look of the bed using over 200 different fabrics and colors.

Hollandia doesn't just make high-tech beds, though. They also make easy foldout couches and even an ottoman that converts into a single.

The convertible ottoman starts with a cover and with a quick pull outwards turns into a very comfortable bed. This one's even a more reasonable price at $900 -- not bad when you take into account that you're getting two pieces of furniture in one.

As for the iCon, I'm gonna start saving now and maybe I can buy one by the time I'm 50. Let me know if you pick one up.
