Union Roster Untouched in MLS Expansion Draft

The Union escaped the 2016 MLS Expansion Draft without losing a player.

Minnesota United FC and Atlanta United FC made five selections each but didn’t claim anyone from the Union’s unprotected list, which included Charlie Davies, Ray Gaddis, Maurice Edu, Ken Tribbett, John McCarthy, Brian Carroll and Leo Fernandes.

Picking first, Atlanta United went with Montreal Impact’s Donny Toia, FC Dallas’ Zach Loyd, Toronto FC’s Clint Irwin, Orlando City’s Mikey Ambrose and Sporting Kansas City’s Alec Kann.

Minnesota United snagged New York Red Bulls’ Chris Duvall, Houston Dynamo’s Collen Warner, Columbus Crew’s Mohammed Saeid, Real Salt Lake’s Jeff Attinella and New England Revolution’s Femi Hollinger-Janzen.

Next up for the Union is the waiver draft, held on Dec. 15, which allows teams to shop and sign less experienced players who have been cut by their clubs but don’t meet the minimum years of service requirement for the MLS Re-entry Draft or free agency. The re-entry draft follows on Dec. 16, involving more veteran players without a club.
