A day after inking one of the homegrown anchors of their offensive line long term, the Eagles inked the long-time anchor of their defensive line to a contract extension.
The Eagles announced Wednesday that they had signed defensive end Trent Cole to a four-year contract extension that will keep the two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher in the nest through 2017.
“We are excited to be able to sign Trent to a new contract,” said head coach Andy Reid. “Trent plays the game with a level of tenacity that’s hard to replicate. He’s one of the premier defensive ends in the league. We have always said that when you watch the tape of him, it’s hard to tell the difference between his first play and his last play. He has an unbelievable motor that does not stop.”
Cole has only missed four games while recording 68 sacks since being drafted out of Cincinnati in the fifth-round of the 2005 NFL Draft. But he is also highly effective against the run recording 421 tackles in his seven seasons with the Birds.
“As good as he is rushing the passer, he is equally as good against the run,” said Reid. ”His energy is contagious on the field.”
On Tuesday the Eagles signed offensive tackle Todd Herremans -- a fellow Eagles late-round draft pick from the 2005 draft -- to a three-year extension that keeps him in Philly through 2016.
“Yes, I think with [T] Todd [Herremans] and me, we conducted our business professionally and the way it’s supposed to be conducted. We never went out to the media and complained. We just did what we had to do to keep moving and caused no problems with the team and this atmosphere. We worked things out and continued to play.”

Of course for each Cole, Herremans and first-round pick Mike Patterson from the post-Super Bowl draft there are more than a handful of busts from that same draft class including Matt McCoy, Scott Young, Kenyonta Marshall and, of course, Reggie Brown.
