The Sixers are one of 17 teams participating in the inaugural NBA 2K esports league season, beginning in 2018.

They will join the Celtics, Cavaliers, Mavericks, Pistons, Warriors, Pacers, Grizzlies, Heat, Bucks, Knicks, Magic, Trail Blazers, Kings, Raptors, Jazz and Wizards in this league for the world's top basketball gamers.

Further details on players, the structure of the league and more will be released in the upcoming months. The NBA and Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. announced plans for the league in February of this year.

"This is the first step in what promises to be an extraordinary league, bringing together the world's best gamers and showcasing elite competition on an international stage," NBA 2K eSports league Managing Director Brendan Donohue said.

The gaming league draws on the massive popularity of NBA 2K. It is both the highest rated and highest revenue generating sports video game in North America. It is also the second-highest sports game globally.

The Sixers already are involved in the esports market. They became the first North American professional sports team to acquire and manage an esports franchise in 2016.

"Our experience with Team Dignitas over the past few months gives us an incredible advantage as we launch this new league," said Sixers Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnership and Activation Chad Biggs.

Gaming is popular among Sixers players themselves. Joel Embiid often posts videos of competing against his friends (and sometimes teammates) in video games. Ben Simmons recently posted this photo about the Call of Duty.
