CAMDEN, N.J. - Elton Brand was pleased with the Sixers' "optionality" two days before Thursday night's draft, laying out the variety of possibilities the Sixers had with five picks entering the night.
He wasn't kidding.
After trading up to take defensive stud Matisse Thybulle and trading Jonathon Simmons and the No. 42 pick to the Wizards in exchange for cash considerations, Brand made his third trade of the evening early in the second round. The Sixers sent the Atlanta Hawks the No. 34 pick, receiving No. 57 and two future second-round picks in return, a team source confirmed. The Hawks took Maryland center Bruno Fernando at 34.
The Celtics selected Carsen Edwards, an explosive scoring guard from Purdue, at No. 33. Boston owned that pick through the Sixers' trade for Thybulle earlier in the night, when the Celtics received the 24th and 33rd picks. Edwards' scoring ability would have been a welcome addition to the Sixers.
The Sixers currently hold the 54th and 57th picks.
