Romero Returns, Herndon Departs

The Phillies shuffled things up in the bullpen Wednesday to open up a spot for left J.C. Romero to return to the team.

Romero, 34, was placed on the DL on April 19 after straining his right calf. He allowed a hit and struck out one in his only rehab assignment at Single-A Lakewood.

In 4 2/3 innings (seven appearances) this season Romero has posted a 0-0 record with a 3.86 ERA.

With any of these types of moves, J.C.’s return means the departure of someone else.

In this case beleaguered righty David Herndon was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Herndon, in his second season with the Phils, is 0-0 with a 9.28 ERA, seven walks and three strikeouts in 11 games.

The return of J.C. now gives the Phillies two lefties in the pen. Antonio Bastardo is the other southpaw.
