Video: Announcer goes Revolutionary War crazy after Bruins win

As Chuck Kobasew snagged a loose puck and scored into an empty Montreal Canadiens' net to clinch Game 3 for the Boston Bruins, the always-colorful NESN announcer Jack Edwards decided to treat viewers to a history lesson.

Gather round, class: Professor Edwards wants to tell you about how the Bruins are like patriots who have thwarted the tyranny of the Habs. Or something like that. If you can remember the last hockey goal call that began "234 years ago yesterday, a bunch of rag-tag farmers stood up against the greatest fighting force in the world," we'd like to hear it.

Edwards is of course getting into the spirit of Patriots' Day in Massachusetts, the annual commemoration of the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War.

It's quite possible that Jack's description of Montreal fans making "a red-coated retreat to the exits" ranks right up there with this maniacal mocking laugh directed at Philadelphia Flyers fans as the nuttiest thing this cat has done. And we're only in Round 1.

Great win for the Bruins on the road, counterpunching whenever Montreal had a breath of life. Even better win for the Washington Capitals over the New York Rangers, as Simeon Varlamov played outstanding between the pipes and Alexander Semin (2 goals), Nicklas Backstrom (3 assists) and Alexander Ovechkin (2 assists) finally found a way around the Rangers' defensive blockade.

Whoa, that was almost an Edwardsian military history moment. Better leave the rest of the analysis for Romig and Three Stars later tonight ...
