2:45 p.m. EST -- TSN reports that Daniel Carcillo has been traded by the Phoenix Coyotes to the Philadelphia Flyers for Scottie Upshall and a second-round pick. And a little piece of us dies inside ...

Look, it's no secret that we're Daniel Carcillo marks on this blog. And it's no secret that he's a perfect fit for the Flyers. But Carcillo in a Flyers sweater is redundant -- it's much more fun when a guy plays like a Flyer but isn't actually a Flyer. You know, like Lucic.

Scottie Upshall is an RFA and the Flyers had been peddling him. So on the scale, it's

As much as we love Carcillo, there's still a chance he could turn out to be Steve Downie. As far as the offensive output goes, not the craziness. And the bottom line is that Upshall was part of that tenacious group of Flyers forwards and a well-liked guy. Chemistry's always a question.

Darren Dreger on TSN reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Nik Antropov to the New York Rangers for a second-round pick and a conditional pick.

2:35 p.m. EST -- The Florida Panthers trading for Chris Neil (as reported by TFP) is actually sort of a stunner, until you look at the roster and see a total lack of bad-assery.

(UPDATE: Twenty lashes with a net noodle for Pagnotta, as the Neil trade was not done and, in fact, he's still an Ottawa Senators pest. Apologies for opining on a trade before it was set in stone.)

As a team looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2000, Neil brings an intensity to the proceedings. Sure, he's not exactly Mr. Popularity -- George James Malik of Snapshots called him a "late-90's era version of Darren McCarty with less self control -- but he's also a professional pest on a team that could use one. And he's a UFA that'll be gone after the season, one assumes.

No word on compensation yet, and Sportsnet reports it's not a done deal yet: "Despite reports that the Senators have traded tough guy Chris Neil to the Panthers, both the Sens and Neil's agent have said no deal is in place. A source close to the team says Neil is still holding out hope that he can get a new contract done in Ottawa."

Sportsnet also claims the Flyers are out of the Bouwmeester Derby.

Derek Morris and Nik Antropov ... tick tock, tick tock.

2:22 p.m. EST -- I hesitate to post this, because you just know that one of these teams will make a move as I'm posting it, but here are a few teams that have yet to make a move that I'd be absolutely floored to see remain quiet through the deadline at 3 p.m. EST:

Montreal Canadiens: The clock is ticking for this team to add a significant offensive player to not only shake up the lineup but to finally fill in the hole left by Robert Lang. Not like this season isn't extra important in that city or anything.

Nashville Predators: They have assets to move and needs scoring like Andy Dick needs reality television. They're a one-line team in the fight of their lives to make the postseason, and I'd be stunned if there's no offense added.

Washington Capitals: They've lost two games by a combined score of 11-4, and all of a sudden everyone's talking about the goaltending again. I'd rather talk about the defense and where a guy like Derek Morris would fit on it; but Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post hears the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers are on the scent.

2:00 p.m. EST -- Another mission accomplished in Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero's "Operation: Grow a Pair." Bill Guerin goes from the New York Islanders to the Penguins, and the TSN panel is fawning over it like it's the Guerin of 1998 instead of the old dude with the .088 shooting percentage.

The Penguins have sent a fifth-round pick that become a four if the Penguins make the playoffs and a three if they win a round.

This is an intangible move, just like it would have been if the Washington Capitals had snagged Guerin's services. From a production standpoint, he's got Miroslav Satan's numbers. But he's a much more important player than Satan in what he brings to a locker room and what he brings to the ice beyond the numbers.

Shero has now added Chris Kunitz, Craig Adams and Bill Guerin to this team. Give the man credit: He realized his decisions last summer neutered this locker room, and has reinserted a spine into this franchise. If that puts the Penguins back in the mindset of last season's team, then Pittsburgh's dangerous.

More coming up on Derek Morris.
