MIAMI -- A person familiar with the negotiations says the Miami Marlins have told Major League Baseball they intend to sign an agreement to sell the team to a group that includes former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter.
Jeter would a limited partner in the group led by venture capitalist Bruce Sherman.
The person confirmed the Marlins' plans to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because the team had not commented publicly. The person said MLB has been told the sale price will be about $1.2 billion to the group, which includes more than 10 entities.
Sherman would be the controlling owner, the person said. Sherman has spent much of his financial career in New York and has also lived in Naples, Florida.
The person said Jeter will be in charge of baseball operations (see full story).
Yankees: Sabathia on DL because of knee; Montgomery back
NEW YORK -- Forced to leave a start this week because of knee pain, CC Sabathia initially thought his career might be over. Now, the 37-year-old left-hander hopes to miss just one turn for the New York Yankees.
Sabathia was put on the 10-day disabled list Friday because of right knee inflammation, and rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make Sabathia's start in Sunday night's series finale against Boston. Sabathia's DL trip was retroactive to Wednesday, a day after he allowed four runs in three innings at Toronto.

"When it first happened initially, I was freaking out," Sabathia said. "I was in a lot of pain and I felt like I was letting the team down."
Sabathia calmed down after he spoke with his wife, Amber, and an MRI showed no additional damage. He had cortisone and platelet rich plasma injections on Wednesday and felt well enough to play catch Thursday (see full story).
Mariners: Ace James Paxton likely out for 3 weeks
SEATTLE -- In the middle of the wild-card race in the American League, the Seattle Mariners will likely be without left-handed ace James Paxton for at least three weeks because of a pectoral strain.
Paxton was put on the 10-day disabled list on Friday, a day after he was pulled in the seventh inning of his start against the Los Angeles Angels. Paxton was optimistic it was a minor injury, but an MRI on Friday morning confirmed a stint on the disabled list and another blow for the Mariners' postseason chances.
Paxton was working his way into the conversation for Cy Young Award consideration. He was the AL pitcher of the month in July and had won seven straight starts heading into Thursday's outing. He wound up with a no-decision. Paxton is 12-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 20 starts.
Seattle recalled Andrew Moore to take Paxton's roster spot.
Red Sox: Pedroia could be headed back to DL; Price throws in outfield
NEW YORK -- Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia could be headed to the disabled list for the third time this season.
Pedroia went 0 for 4 as a designated hitter Wednesday at Tampa Bay in his first game since July 28. Pedroia's left knee was too inflamed for him to play Friday night for the AL East leaders at Yankee Stadium, and Red Sox manager John Farrell said a return to the DL was possible.
"Our goal was to get him some at-bats before this series," Farrell said. "There's been a little bit of a pushback in terms of the reaction, some swelling, some inflammation, so we're holding him out today."
"I wouldn't rule out the DL," Farrell added. "We'll see where this goes over the next 24 hours," (see full story).
White Sox: Lopez recalled, starts vs Royals
CHICAGO -- Right-hander Reynaldo Lopez will start and make his White Sox debut on Friday night against Kansas City following his recall from Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day. To make room for Lopez, the White Sox assigned lefty David Holmberg to the farm club.
The 23-year-old Lopez was acquired by rebuilding Chicago from Washington in December 2016 with right-handers Lucas Giolito and Dane Dunning for outfielder Adam Eaton.
Lopez appeared in 11 games for the Nationals in 2016, starting six, and was 5-3 with a 4.91 ERA. In 22 starts with Charlotte this season, he was 6-7 with a 3.79 ERA.
"His last four or five outings in the minor leagues have been very good, so we hope that will transition here," manager Rick Renteria said.
The White Sox also acquired minor-league right-hander Ryan Burr from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday for international signing bonus pool money. Burr, 23, has split the season between two A-level clubs.
