Former Phillie Darin Ruf Signs With Samsung Lions in South Korea

It's seemed inevitable the last few years that Darin Ruf would end up playing somewhere in Asia, where he could make some money and where his power would play against weaker competition.

The inevitable happened this week, with the Samsung Lions of South Korea's KBO announcing they've acquired his contract from the Dodgers.

According to Jee-ho Yoo of Korea's Yonhap News Agency, Ruf will make $1.1 million this season. It's a much better opportunity for him in terms of playing time and finances than he would have found with the Dodgers.

Seeking salary relief, the Dodgers acquired Ruf and Darnell Sweeney from the Phillies this offseason for Howie Kendrick.

Ruf, now 30, is a .240/.314/.433 career hitter in the majors with 35 home runs in 833 plate appearances.

He'll join the Lions on Saturday.
