Eagles Sign 5 Players to Practice Squad; 5 Spots Still Open

After claiming three players and releasing three to fit them in, the Eagles have the second version of their 53-man roster set.

Now, they've begun to assemble their 10-man practice squad.

On Sunday, they signed OL Darrell Greene, WR Marcus Johnson, RB Byron Marshall, DT Aziz Shittu and WR David Watford to the practice squad. All five were in camp with the Eagles, but were released at final cuts and cleared waivers.

The Eagles still have five spots remaining on the practice squad. Those spots will likely start to be filled soon. If recently cut WR Paul Turner and CB C.J. Smith clear waivers, there's a good chance the Eagles will sign them to the practice squad, league sources tell CSNPhilly.com

The monetary difference between being on the 53-man roster and on the practice squad is significant, especially for undrafted players. Practice squad players must be paid a minimum of $6,900 per week, while players on the roster make much more. The minimum salary for a rookie on the roster is $450,000 per season.

The first five players on the practice squad make sense:

- Greene, from San Diego State, has some promise and the Eagles liked him enough to give him $105,000 guaranteed in his contract -- that was the most of their undrafted free agents.

- Johnson, a wideout from Texas, started off camp strong, but was hampered by a quad injury.

- Shittu, the defensive tackle from Stanford, had a good preseason but was behind Destiny Vaeao. Shittu missed all spring because of the arcane NCAA/NFL graduation rule.

- Marshall, the running back from Oregon, looked good, but the Eagles weren't keeping five running backs. He missed the spring as well.

- And Watford was a college quarterback at Hampton and is transitioning to receiver in the NFL. He'll likely be able to help run scout team during the week.
