After Getting Torched, Browns Haven't Changed Stance on Carson Wentz

The last few days for the Browns have been as rough as it gets. They were blown out by the Eagles in Sunday's season opener, torched by the quarterback they passed on with the second pick in the draft, and forced a day later to place Robert Griffin III on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

RG3 was the starting quarterback the Browns entrusted their team to over Wentz, who they could have selected with the second pick. Griffin has a history of injuries and of not protecting himself, so his not staying healthy wasn't a huge surprise.

You know by now that the Browns weren't smitten with Wentz and traded the pick to the Eagles. Just before the season started, Browns chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta said the organization didn't think Wentz would be a top-20 NFL quarterback and that's why they passed on him.

And after Wentz passed all over the Browns Sunday, Cleveland head coach Hue Jackson said their minds haven't changed.

"No, we haven't (second-guessed ourselves),'" Jackson told Cleveland.com. "That's one thing I can tell you for sure has not happened. He had a good game, a great game if you guys want to term it that, and I respect that. He's a fine young man and they have good coaches and a good organization, and he is going to do well for them, but that was one game.

"He played well. Like I said, we'll look back and see where he is over a period of time, but the Browns have to get better. That's what we have to do. We have to play better, and I think we all understand that."

The Browns moved down in the first round rather than taking a quarterback they thought they'd be reaching for. You really can't fault them for making that decision because teams get into trouble and rebuilds last longer when they have to talk themselves into a QB early in the draft.

Why didn't Dallas Goedert see more targets without A.J. Brown in lineup?

But one game into his career, Wentz has already shown he has the skill set that could eventually make him one of the league's better quarterbacks. If he eventually does reach that level, then that would be one more thing for Browns fans to be disappointed by. They've gone through 25 starting quarterbacks since 1999 so this is nothing new.
