Lane Johnson Has No Clue What to Expect When Eagles Get to Training Camp

Despite plenty of lingering questions about coronavirus safety procedures and despite ongoing negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, the Eagles are still scheduled to begin training camp next week.

On NBC Sports Philadelphia's Quick Slants on Monday, Derrick Gunn asked Lane Johnson what he thinks will be waiting when he gets there.

"I don't know," Johnson said. "I have no damn clue."

It certainly doesn't seem like Johnson is the only one with no clue what training camp will look like.

"Our report day is July 28," Johnson continued. "As far as safety protocols, I believe we're all going to be wearings masks, probably the first day. Really, the first couple days is really gathering information before we start practicing. That's really my idea of what's going to be happening."

At least one big question about procedures for training camp was answered on Monday afternoon:

NFL and NFLPA have agreed on testing protocols. They will start with daily testing for the first two weeks, then go to every other day if the positive test rate falls below 5 percent. If it doesn't, they'll keep testing daily.

Still, plenty of players are understandably concerned about their safety and the safety of their families as they prepare to head back to work. Many players put on a social media blitz Sunday, urging the NFL to come up with a better plan and finally relay it to players.

Some players are so concerned they're thinking about not reporting to training camp. Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, whose wife is due in October, told ESPN he's considering not reporting to camp to protect his family.

Johnson was asked if he would be surprised to see other players not report for training camp.

"No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't be surprised," Johnson said. "Because a lot of our questions haven't been answered. You saw the surge of tweets yesterday. Everybody is really concerned. We've had time to discuss this; there's been months of discussing this and here comes crunch time and we're still at the same place. I wouldn't be surprised."

Eagles rookies are scheduled to report to training camp on Tuesday, followed by quarterbacks and injured players on July 23 and all other players on July 28.

We're getting close to training camp and players want answers.

"I think, ultimately, people are scared. We don't really know what to do," Johnson said. "I know we want to play football. The world is ready for us to play football, but we still don't know. It's still up in the air. We're still waiting."
