Eagles Planning Joint Practices With Dolphins as Well as Browns

Eagles add a second week of joint practices this summer originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Eagles, already scheduled to hold joint practices this summer with the Browns in Cleveland, will follow up those sessions with practices in Miami with the Dolphins, the team announced Tuesday.

This will be the second straight year the Eagles hold two sets of joint practices. They practiced last summer with the Patriots at the NovaCare Complex in advance of their preseason game and then the following week trained with the Jets in Florham Park the week of their preseason game against the Jets.

The Eagles in the past have held joint practices under Ray Rhodes, Chip Kelly and Doug Pederson, but these are the first two years they’ve held multiple sessions with other teams.

The Browns and Dolphins both have selected training camp practices open to the public. Both teams are expected to share information on how to get free tickets for those sessions closer to the start of camps in late July.

Nick Sirianni spoke numerous times last summer about how valuable practicing against other teams as opposed to by yourselves was in terms of evaluating players and preparing the team for the regular season.

In Sirianni’s eyes, the practices have overtaken the actual preseason games in terms of importance, and he plays his starters in the preseason less than any Eagles coach in recent memory.

Although the Eagles haven’t announced the exact joint practice dates, the sessions are generally two and three days before the preseason game, with no practice the day prior to the game.

The Eagles and Browns will play Aug. 21 and the game in Miami is Aug. 27.

The Dolphins, who had practiced at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, from 1993 through 2020, opened a new $135 million facility last year. The Baptist Health Training Complex has two grass fields, an indoor turf field in Miami Gardens.

The Eagles and Dolphins held joint practices at the NovaCare Complex before their 2017 preseason game at the Linc.

The Miami sessions will offer a reunion between former Alabama teammates Jalen Hurts and Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. It was Tagovailoa who replaced Hurts when he was benched at halftime of the 2017 College Football Playoff championship game against Georgia in Atlanta and led Alabama to an overtime win.

Hurts spent one more year at Alabama, mainly backing up Tagovailoa, before transferring to Oklahoma.

Former Eagles who could be practicing against their former team include Duke Riley, Eric Rowe, Raheem Mostert and River Cracraft.

The Dolphins have a new head coach in long-time Kyle Shanahan assistant Mike McDaniel.
