Marlins 10, Phillies 3: Zach Eflin Struggles in Miami

BOX SCORE

MIAMI - One night after pounding out 14 hits, the Phillies' offense sputtered early in a 10-3 loss to the Miami Marlins on Saturday night.

The Phillies had just one hit through seven innings and six for the game. Five of those hits were doubles - two by Scott Kingery late in the game.

Rhys Hoskins doubled in the ninth and scored on a hit by Odubel Herrera to avert a shutout. Later in the inning, Nick Williams clubbed a two-run double.

But don't let the late outburst fool you. This game wasn't close.

Other than the ninth inning, it was a pretty poor showing for the Phillies and that included the starting pitching. Zach Eflin, so good in his first two starts, was tagged for three homers and six runs in four innings of work.

Phillies release Opening Day roster, place 5 players on IL

Phillies 2024 Opening Day postponed to Friday

Though off to an 8-5 start, the Phillies have lost three of their last four games and the offense has done little in two of them. The Phils were held to three hits, all singles, in Wednesday night's 15-1 loss to Washington.

• The Marlins hit three home runs totaling 1,251 feet against Eflin in the third inning. Brian Anderson hit a first-pitch curveball, Neil Walker a 1-1 changeup and Austin Dean a first-pitch fastball. Dean's homer was a two-run shot and it gave the Marlins a 6-0 lead. He had five RBIs in the game.

• Finesse lefty Caleb Smith kept the Phillies off balance with six innings of one-hit ball. He allowed a one-out double to Andrew McCutchen in the third, but stranded him there.

• The Phillies did have Smith on the ropes early. He issued two-out walks to Bryce Harper and Hoskins in the first inning but survived an 11-pitch showdown with J.T. Realmuto (strike out) to get out of the inning unscathed.

Miami pound machine

The Marlins entered the game hitting just .212 as a team. They mauled Phillies' pitching for 18 hits.

Eflin's night

Eflin gave up 10 hits and six runs over four innings. He had given up just six hits and one run over 12 innings in his first two starts.

Bullpen check

Juan Nicasio allowed six hits and four runs in relief of Eflin, but he did help save the bullpen by giving the Phils three innings.

Up next

The Phillies and Marlins play the rubber match of the series on Sunday afternoon. Vince Velasquez will pitch against Jose Urena.

Urena went 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts against the Phillies last season. He won his last two starts against the Phils and allowed just two runs over 12 innings.

It would not be surprising to see manager Gabe Kapler give a couple of his reserves a start on Sunday.

After that

The Phillies host the Mets in a three-game series beginning Monday night. The Phils will see Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Zach Wheeler in that series. The Phillies will counter with Aaron Nola, Nick Pivetta and Jake Arrieta.
