As expected, first overall pick Mickey Moniak agreed to terms with the Phillies, the team announced Monday after ending an 0-6 homestand with a 3-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Moniak will forego his commitment ot UCLA to sign with the Phils. Terms have not been disclosed by the team, but CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury reported last week Moniak was expected to agree on a signing bonus somewhere between $6.5 million and 7 million.
The Phillies will officially introduce Moniak in a 2 p.m. press conference Tuesday.
Moniak, who became the Phillies' first No. 1 overall pick since Pat Burrell in 1998 earlier this month, was ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America.
A 6-foot-2, 180 pound centerfielder, Moniak bats left-handed and throws with his right. He's been compared to former major leaguer Steve Finley.
Playing at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California, Moniak hit .476 with seven home runs, 12 triples and four doubles this season.
"Collectively, we believe Mickey was the best player available in the draft," Johnny Almaraz, the Phillies head of amateur scouting, said after the draft (see story). "He's a true centerfielder with incredible offensive ability and the potential to be a perennial All-Star."
