Hollywood Hamels Shuts Down L.A.

Cole Hamels played the part of the ace and Ryan Howard played the part of the slugger as the Phillies beat the Dodgers 2-0 at a sweltering Citizens Bank Park Wednesday night.

Hamels looked more like the Phillies No. 1 ace than the No. 4 ace as he shutdown the Dodger for eight strong innings. The lefty allowed six hits and no walks while striking out nine to improve to 8-2 on the season.

All the help Hamels needed came from slugger Ryan Howard who broke the Phillies out of a 0-for-June homerless streak with a sixth inning blast off L.A. starter Hiroki Kuroda (5-7).

The homer was one of just five hits for the Phightins as their offense continued to struggle. They did manage a second run when Shane Victorino scampered home ahead of the throw on a Domonic Brown fielder’s choice.

Luckily Hamels didn’t need much support Wednesday as the Phillies (37-25) recovered from Tuesday’s loss to take the three-game set from L.A.

Next up is a four-game set with the Cubs. Phillies Kyle Kendrick (3-4, 3.78 ERA) faces righty Randy Wells (1-1, 5.74 ERA) in the opener Thursday night.
