Former Eagle Joe “Bud” Sutton Dies

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back and halfback Joe “Bud” Sutton passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

Sutton played three seasons with the Eagles from 1950 to 1952. He finished with 13 interceptions in 30 games and led the team with eight interceptions in 1950. He also played one season with the Buffalo Bills in 1949 before joining the Eagles.

Sutton has local roots beyond playing for the Birds. He was born on April 24, 1924, in Philadelphia and attended Northeast Catholic High School where he helped lead the football team to the city championship in 1942. Sutton served in the army in the 131st battalion in World War II after graduating high school. He then attended Temple University after returning from service.

Sutton is survived by a wife, a son and two daughters.
