Scottie Upshall is headed west. The Flyers' left winger was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for tough guy Daniel Carcillo.
The Flyers also threw in a second-round draft pick, according to TSN Canada.
Shortly after the details of the Upshall trade were released, the team made a second deal, trading a sixth-round pick for Kyle McLaren, a minor-league defenseman who plays for San Jose's AHL affiliate.
Carcillo, 24, is a left winger who leads the NHL with 174 penalty minutes. He has three goals and seven assists for the Coyotes this season. Last season, he had 13 goals, 11 assists and 324 penalty minutes in 57 games.
McLaren, 31, hasn't played in an NHL game this season. He has no goals, seven assists and 17 penalty minutes in 17 games played for the Worcester Sharks this season.
The Flyers lost Upshall, 25, a speedy forward who never quite lived up to his reputation as a playmaker since joining the team in 2007. He has six goals and 14 assists in 54 games so far this season.
The trade details came down right before the 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline Wednesday.
While fan reaction to the deal has been mixed, the trade clears some much-needed cap space for the Flyers, who have struggled to clear room since Danny Briere returned to the team March 1.
