Flyers Must Skate on Without Danny Boy

Another week and another setback for Flyers center Danny Briere -- it's starting to sound like a broken record.

The Fly Guy hasn't done much flying this season -- missing 37 of the Flyers' 46 games. Heck, Sarah Palin may have spent more time on the NHL ice this season than ol' Danny Boy.

So what's wrong? What injury has kept him off the ice?

Briere has been hindered by groin and abdominal problems. On Thursday he had successful surgery on his groin/abdominal area, according to the Flyers.

A nerve impairment was fixed during the surgery, said General Manager Paul Holmgren.

Briere as he is expected to miss at least another four weeks, said Holmgren. It was originally reported that Briere would only miss two weeks, not four.

The team should be getting used to not seeing Briere out on the ice -- injuries have held the 31-year-old center out of the last 22 games.

You can't say Briere isn't trying to hard to return to the Flyers ASAP. He skated three times recently for the minor-league Philadelphia Phantoms while trying to get back to the NHL.

Briere had looked good earning five points in his three games on the mend. But, it seems that he wasn't back to full health -- hence the surgery.

The key for the orange and black is to not wait on the hope that Briere will play again this season. The Flyers are in the thick of the hunt and may need to look to bring in another center if they hope to stay at the top.

In the meantime -- "Oh Danny Boy" we miss you.
