Even though they can’t do anything official until July 1, the Flyers announced a deal Wednesday afternoon with goalie Ray Emery.

“We are extremely excited and happy to have entered into this agreement with Ray. We believe Ray is a good, young goalie that has a unique blend of size, competitiveness and athleticism,” Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren said.

Emery played last season overseas in Russia, partly due to his aggressive nature on and off the ice. But according to Emery, his volatile ways are a thing of the past.

“I lost the opportunity [to play in the NHL] once before and I’m not going to do anything to jeopardize that… I had two penalty minutes this season for shooting the puck over the class. I’m pretty clamed down,” he said.

The 6’2’’, 196-pound, Emery will replace Martin Biron between the pipes and will sign a one-year deal as soon as the NHL allows. Per Flyers policy, financial terms were not released.

The 26-year-old Emery was 22-8 last season with a 1.86 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. In three seasons with the Ottawa Senators, his last NHL team, Emery went 71-40 with a 2.71 games average and a .907 save percentage.

Flyers fans have been split since news first broke of the possibility of signing Emery.
