OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas quarterback Kellen Moore broke his right ankle in a training camp practice Tuesday, likely forcing the Cowboys to look outside the organization for an experienced backup.
The injury happened during one of the last plays of 11-on-11 work in the second full-pad practice of camp. Guard Jared Smith was pushed back by defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye and stepped on Moore's ankle.
Without Moore, there isn't a backup behind Tony Romo with any NFL experience. Dallas drafted former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott in the fourth round this year, and undrafted free agent Jameill Showers is in his second year. Prescott and Showers have been sharing third-team work.
The injury came four days after owner Jerry Jones declared his confidence in Moore, who made the first two starts of his career in the final two games last season with Romo sidelined by a broken collarbone. He lost both as Dallas finished 4-12 (see full story).
Rams: Case Keenum running the offense so far in camp
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) -- Jared Goff draws most of the attention from Rams fans in training camp.
But right now Case Keenum runs the offense.
While Goff had a crowd of more than 2,000 fans groaning when he fumbled the snap from under center and cheering on a long touchdown pass to undrafted rookie wide receiver Nelson Spruce, Keenum steadily took the starters through the Rams' first full practice in pads at UC Irvine on Tuesday.

That's what the Rams hoped would happen when selecting Keenum as the starter before organized team activities. That decision allowed the quarterback entering his fifth season in the NFL to oversee the offense's development in the spring and summer while giving the No. 1 overall draft pick Goff time to get settled.
"When I'm at quarterback, I'm running the show," Keenum said. "It's my huddle, it's my squad, it's my offense and I am taking ownership of it."
Keenum's role was evident over the weekend when starting receivers Tavon Austin (cramps) and Kenny Britt (excused absence) were unavailable, leaving a group of largely unknown players available at the position (see full story).
49ers: Kelly says preseason games will decide QB competition
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Coach Chip Kelly is putting Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert on equal footing as they compete for the San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback job.
Both players received the same number of practice reps through the first three days of training camp. Kelly said he will use preseason games to decide the starter.
"They're not going to get hit in any of our training sessions and there's no quarterback in the NFL or even college that probably gets hit in practice," Kelly said.
"So, really the big determination with those guys will be the preseason games are going to be huge for those guys."
Gabbert replaced Kaepernick nine games into last season after the 49ers went 2-6 in Kaepernick's starts under former coach Jim Tomsula. They finished 3-5 with Gabbert starting, who posted a career-best 86.2 passer rating after a turbulent three-year tenure in Jacksonville led to a trade to San Francisco in 2014 (see full story).
