Golden Tate on Story Behind Name: ‘Somebody Was Drunk at Some Point, Right?'

We have about 67 golden headlines in the vault and Golden Tate hasn't even played a snap yet for the Eagles.

Yeah, the name is awesome.

Especially for us media folks.

But it didn't sound so great for Tate growing up.

"It was kind of a struggle when I was younger, got made fun of a lot," the Eagles' newest wide receiver said Wednesday at his introductory press conference. "It kind of haunts me sometimes."

Sheesh.

His full name is Golden H. Tate III. So what's behind it?

"I think I kind of grew into it," Tate said. "You can't really be a dull person with the name Golden, I guess. But I'm actually the third and there's really no super awesome, cool story about it. I just tell people, I figured somebody was drunk at some point, right?"

And Tate said don't worry, it has been different story since his childhood.

"I've grown into it, embraced it and I love it," he said.

Philly should love it, too. The city will love Tate even more if he helps the 4-4 defending champs make another run at the Lombardi Trophy.

"I don't know much about Philly," Tate said, "but I have a feeling I'm going to learn quickly.

"I just want to win."

That's a golden answer in this town.
