Eagles Sign Veteran Orlando Scandrick, Who Adds Depth at Cornerback

Updated: Monday, 9 a.m.

After working him out on Saturday, the Eagles signed veteran cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

Scandrick, 32, has played 10 seasons in the NFL. He spent last season with the Chiefs but was with the division-rival Cowboys from 2008-2018.

The 10 Biggest Challenges Facing New Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni

Where Does Nick Sirianni's Hiring Leave Longtime Eagle Duce Staley?

The Eagles waived DT Anthony Rush to make room for Scandrick. The roster is still full at 90.

Sure, the Eagles already had 10 corners on their roster, but they haven't had all of them healthy. Jalen Mills (foot) is still on the Active/PUP, Ronald Darby (ACL) is still working his way back and now Cre'Von LeBlanc was hurt early in training camp. He was seen in a walking boot and using a Roll-a-Bout on Saturday.

If LeBlanc is out for an extended period of time, it's important to note that the 5-foot-10 Scandrick has plenty of experience playing the nickel cornerback position. Do-it-all safety Malcolm Jenkins has been taking some extra reps at the position over the last two days without LeBlanc on the field.

During the first few practices of training camp, the top three cornerbacks have been Rasul Douglas, Sidney Jones and Avonte Maddox. In early practices, Maddox was playing outside in base package and sliding inside in nickel. On Saturday, Jones and Douglas were the starters on base and Maddox was just the nickel CB.

We'll have to see how quickly Scandrick is able to get caught up to speed, but after last year's injuries at the position, the Eagles aren't going to risk not having depth this year. They want to be deep in the secondary. While the Eagles have some talented young players, those players don't have a ton of experience and are still somewhat unproven.

Scandrick definitely has experience. In his 10 NFL seasons, he has played in 140 games and has started 76.
