Eagles Claim Safety Godwin Igwebuike Off Waivers

The Eagles on Tuesday afternoon claimed safety 24-year-old safety Godwin Igwebuike, who was waived by the 49ers on Monday.

Igwebuike (6-2, 212) went undrafted last year out of Northwestern, where he had 324 tackles, 7 interceptions and 12 1/2 tackles for loss in four years.

After going undrafted, Igwebuike signed with the Buccaneers. He spent some time with the Bucs on their practice squad and the active roster before he was let go. From there, he joined the 49ers in late November and lasted until Monday.

In his rookie season, Igwebuike played in six games (five with SF, one with TAM) and had two tackles.

It certainly doesn't seem like Igwebuike figures into the Eagles' plan this season, but there is at least some opportunity for a safety in Philly.

The Eagles didn't draft a safety this year despite some need at that position and will likely enter spring practices with a depth problem. At the top of the roster, they have Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod, but their top backups are 31-year-old Andrew Sendejo and former undrafted free agent Tre Sullivan.

The Eagles hold their rookie camp on May 10. While they didn't draft a safety, they reportedly added Temple safety Delvon Randall as an undrafted player. Both Igwebuike and Randall will get their chances this spring.

Before the draft, the Eagles had 75 players on their roster. They drafted five and added Hassan Ridgeway in a trade. So Igwebuike is the 82nd player on the roster. The Eagles have been snatching up UDFAs, so they'll need to make some more space before they sign those guys. They will announce those signings just before rookie camp starts on May 10.
