Drunken Driver Strikes, Kills Brother of Eagles Player Derek Barnett in Hit-and-Run Crash, Police Say

The older brother of Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett was killed by a drunken driver in a hit-and-run crash early Tuesday morning in Nashville, Tennessee, according to police.

David Barnett, 33, of Nashville, was driving a 2011 Dodge Challenger eastbound on Burkitt Road Tuesday around 3:25 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by a 1997 Ford Econoline van traveling westbound.

Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van, identified by police as Felipe Castelblanco, 47, walked away from the scene but was taken into custody a short distance away, police said.

Castelblanco smelled strongly of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and had bloodshot and watery eyes, according to investigators. He allegedly admitted to drinking whiskey prior to the crash.

Castelblanco was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, failure to render aid and failure to notify law enforcement. He is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

NBC Sports Philadelphia confirmed David Barnett is the older brother of Derek Barnett, 22, the Eagles' first-round pick last year, and a native of Nashville.

Derek Barnett has been on injured reserve since getting hurt against the Panthers on Oct. 21. He had five sacks for the Super Bowl champions last year and 2½ before getting hurt this year.

Derek Barnett was the 14th pick in last year's NFL draft after playing college football at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
