15 Months After Surgery, Eagles WR Mack Hollins Still Can't Practice

Fifteen months later, Mack Hollins is still hurt.

Hollins, the Eagles' fourth-round draft pick in 2017, won't be participating in OTAs for the time being as he continues to rehab following sports hernia surgery 15 months ago.

Head coach Doug Pederson made the surprising revelation that Hollins is still not healthy enough to practice Tuesday morning when he met with the media prior to the Eagles' first OTA session of the spring.

This has been a bizarre ordeal for the promising wide receiver from North Carolina, who played in all 16 games as a rookie during the 2017 Super Bowl season.

Hollins initally underwent surgery in February of 2018, soon after the Super Bowl, and in the locker room the Monday before last year's season opener he pronounced himself healthy and ready to play against the Falcons.

Two days later, Pederson said Hollins had experienced a "minor setback," would miss the Falcons game and then be further evaluated. But he wound up going on Injured Reserve and missed the entire season, eventually undergoing a second surgery at some point.

Hollins caught 16 passes for 226 yards and a 64-yard touchdown from Carson Wentz against the Redskins as a rookie in 2017. He added one nine-yard catch in the postseason. He also played 231 special teams snaps during the regular season and emerged as one of the Eagles' best special teamers.

With the Eagles bringing back DeSean Jackson and returning Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor and drafting JJ Arcega-Whiteside in the second round, and adding prospects like DeAndre Thompkins and Charles Johnson, there is a lot of competition at wide receiver, and Hollins' spot on the team is certainly not guaranteed. Guys like Braxton Miller, Greg Ward and Shelton Gibson are also in camp.

Pederson did not indicate when Hollins might return to action.

"I'm encouraged by his progress right now," he said.
