How's this for a little appetizer to the Eagles' big Monday Night Football game?

The Phillies completed a big trade with the Seattle Mariners.

The deal brings All-Star shortstop Jean Segura to Philadelphia. Infielders Carlos Santana and J.P. Crawford will go to Seattle. The Phillies also received left-handed pitcher James Pazos and right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio in the deal.

The trade was finalized shortly after 5 p.m. after Segura officially waived his no-trade clause and the teams completed a review of medical records on the players involved.

Phillies release Opening Day roster, place 5 players on IL

Phillies 2024 Opening Day postponed to Friday

Segura will play shortstop for the Phillies in 2019. The team will still pursue free agent Manny Machado with the hopes of convincing him to play third base, which is his best position.

With Santana moving on, the Phils now have a clear path to move Rhys Hoskins from left field to first base. That was a major offseason objective for the club.

Segura, who turns 29 in March, is signed through 2022 and owed $60 million. He is an excellent hitter - he hit .308 with an .803 OPS over the last three seasons - and an above-average defender. He led the majors with 203 hits in 2016.

Segura can also play second base, but the Phillies still have Cesar Hernandez at the position for another season before he becomes a free agent. The Phils have considered trading Hernandez, but the market is flush with second basemen. If the Phillies hang on to Hernandez for 2019, Scott Kingery could move into the super-utility role that the team envisioned for him last spring.

In other Phillies matters, the team remains in pursuit of free agent starting pitcher Patrick Corbin. The left-hander is also being pursued by the Yankees and Nationals and is expected to make a decision soon.

The Phils are also pursuing lefty relievers Zach Britton and Andrew Miller, both free agents.
